Conversion tracking: how to know exactly which adverts turn into enquiries

Google Ads conversion tracking tells you which adverts, keywords and campaigns produce actual enquiries, calls and sales, not just clicks. Without it, you know how many people clicked but have no idea what happened next. You are spending money in the dark.

A campaign might generate 200 clicks at a reasonable cost per click, but if only two of those clicks become phone calls and nobody tracks that, the campaign looks healthy when it may be losing money. Conversion tracking closes that gap. It connects the click to the outcome so you can fund what works and cut what does not.

This guide explains what conversion tracking is, how to set it up and what goes wrong when it is missing. It is written for business owners who run Google Ads or pay someone to manage them.

What is conversion tracking and why does it matter?

Conversion tracking records when a visitor who clicked your advert completes a valuable action on your website. That action might be submitting an enquiry form, clicking your phone number, requesting a quote or making a purchase.

It matters because clicks are not results. A click is someone arriving at your website. A conversion is someone doing the thing you wanted them to do. If you are not measuring conversions, you cannot tell good campaigns from bad ones.

Conversion tracking also powers Google’s automated bidding. Smart Bidding strategies like Maximise Conversions and Target CPA use your conversion data to decide which searches to bid on. Without accurate data, the algorithm guesses. With good data, it finds more people who are likely to enquire.

How does Google Ads conversion tracking work?

You define what counts as a conversion, a tracking tag is installed on your website, and that tag fires when a visitor completes the action.

A potential customer searches Google, sees your advert and clicks it. They arrive on your website and fill in your contact form. The tracking tag detects the submission and sends a signal back to Google Ads, which records the conversion and connects it to the specific keyword, advert and campaign that produced it.

The result is a complete chain: from the search term the customer typed, to the advert they clicked, to the enquiry they sent. The tracking tag is usually installed through Google Tag Manager, a free tool that manages tags without editing your site’s code directly.

What counts as a conversion for a small business?

A conversion is any action that represents genuine business value. For most small businesses, the key ones are:

Form submissions. Contact forms, quote requests, booking forms.

Phone calls. Google can track calls from advert extensions and calls from your website after an advert click.

Email link clicks. If your site shows a clickable email address, tracking those clicks captures enquiries that bypass your form.

Purchases. For ecommerce businesses, a completed transaction with its value.

Not everything should be a conversion. Page views, scroll depth and time on site are engagement signals, not business outcomes. Tracking them as conversions makes your data noisy and tells Google’s bidding to optimise for the wrong things. A useful test: would you pay for this action to happen? If yes, track it. If not, leave it out.

How do you set up conversion tracking in Google Ads?

Create a conversion action in Google Ads, then install the tracking tag on your website.

Step one: create the conversion action. In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Conversions, then New conversion action. Choose “Website”, define the action you are tracking and set a value if applicable.

Step two: install the tag. Google provides a global site tag (for every page) and an event snippet (fires on the page or action confirming the conversion, such as a thank-you page after form submission).

Step three: use Google Tag Manager. Rather than editing code, install Tag Manager once and manage tags through its interface. Create a trigger for your conversion event and attach the tag. This is cleaner and less likely to break during website updates.

Step four: test it. Use Google Tag Assistant or Tag Manager’s preview mode to confirm the tag fires. Submit a test form and check that the conversion appears in Google Ads within a few hours. Do not skip this. A tag that is installed but broken gives you false confidence in bad data.

If this feels too technical, that is normal. Most small businesses have their tracking set up by a PPC agency or web developer. What matters is that you understand what it does and can verify it is in place.

What happens if you run adverts without conversion tracking?

Everything becomes guesswork. Without conversion tracking:

You cannot calculate your true cost per enquiry. You know cost per click, but not cost per lead.

Smart Bidding has no data to learn from and cannot optimise.

You cannot tell which keywords produce enquiries. A cheap keyword might generate zero leads while an expensive one delivers your best customers. Without tracking, both look the same.

You cannot compare campaigns or advert variations on the metric that actually matters: conversion rate.

In our client work, one of the most common findings when auditing an underperforming Google Ads account is that conversion tracking is missing, broken or measuring the wrong things.

Fixing it does not change the campaign directly, but it reveals what needs changing.

An honest caveat: even with perfect conversion tracking, some enquiries arrive through

routes that are difficult to attribute. A customer might click an advert on Monday, think about it, and call on Thursday without revisiting the website. Tracking captures most of the picture, but not every last piece.

What are the most common conversion tracking mistakes?

The most common mistake is not having tracking at all. The second is having it misconfigured without realising, which creates confidence in inaccurate numbers.

Other frequent problems:

Tracking page views as conversions. If your tag fires when someone lands on your contact page rather than when they submit the form, you will see far more conversions than you actually received.

Double counting. Two tags firing on the same submission halves your apparent cost per enquiry and makes bad campaigns look acceptable.

Not tracking phone calls. Many small businesses get more enquiries by phone than by form. Track forms only and you measure half the picture.

Broken tags after website changes. A redesign, a plugin update or a new form builder can break tracking silently. Check after every significant change.

How do you check whether your conversion tracking is working?

Submit a test conversion yourself and verify it appears in Google Ads. Fill in your own form after clicking one of your adverts. The conversion should show in your dashboard within a few hours. If it does not, something is broken.

You can also check:

Google Tag Assistant. Shows which tags fire on any page.

Tag Manager preview mode. Shows triggers and tags as you browse.

The Conversions section in Google Ads. The Status column should say “Recording conversions”. If it says “No recent conversions” and enquiries are coming in, investigate.

Check monthly. Five minutes catches problems before they corrupt weeks of data.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set up conversion tracking without a developer?

Yes, using Google Tag Manager. Google provides step-by-step guides. However, if you have never worked with tags, the risk of misconfiguration is real and incorrect data costs more than professional setup. Most PPC agencies include tracking as standard.

Does conversion tracking work with all website platforms?

It works with WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Wix and every other major platform. Google Tag Manager or each platform’s native Google integration handles installation. Custom-built sites need a developer to add the tags manually.

How long does it take for conversion data to appear?

Conversions typically show in Google Ads within three to six hours, occasionally up to 24. Note that Google attributes conversions to the date of the click, not the date of the action, so a form submitted today may appear under yesterday’s data.

The short version

Google Ads conversion tracking connects clicks to real business outcomes. Without it, you cannot calculate cost per enquiry, Google’s bidding cannot optimise, and you have no way of knowing which keywords produce paying customers.

Set up conversion actions for form submissions, phone calls and purchases. Install tracking through Google Tag Manager, test it yourself and check monthly. If you are running adverts without conversion tracking, fixing that is the single highest-value change available to you.

If your campaigns lack tracking or you are unsure whether your setup is accurate, our PPC service includes a full tracking audit as a first step. We check what is measured, what is missing and what needs fixing before looking at anything else.
